Moto G Android 4.4.2 KitKat upgrade surprise release today

Motorola has released Android 4.4.2 KitKat for the Moto G, surprising users with an early upgrade for the mid-range smartphone. The company had previously promised to begin its KitKat update program sometime by early 2014, but got in on the game early with the surprise best-seller Moto G.

The update, which begins rolling out today, is initially for unlocked Moto G handsets bought either on Amazon or through Motorola's own webstore in the US. Those who bought a Moto G through a carrier, or in a different region - whether through a carrier or not - will get the update "soon" Motorola promises, though there's no public timeline as yet.

It's not the only Motorola device which has been getting some delicious KitKat today. Verizon began distributing an update for the DROID Ultra, the DROID Maxx, and the DROID Mini earlier, part of Motorola's earlier commitment to release more timely updates.

The update for the DROID Ultra, the DROID Maxx, and the DROID Mini also started to roll out in Brazil for retail handsets, Motorola confirmed, with more carriers and regions set to follow soon.

Android has been broadly criticized for the breadth of OS versions handsets launch running, with many existing users still languishing one or more versions behind, and new devices still on sale with out-of-date software preinstalled. It's in marked contrast, many have observed, to Apple's iOS update process; over 70% of iOS devices now run the latest iOS 7 recent figures suggested.

AT&T and Nokia release Lumia Black update for Lumia 1020; Lumia 1520 also gets new firmware

This week the most powerful camera phone on the planet - so to speak - has recieved a software update from Microsoft. The Nokia Lumia 1020 with its beastly back-facing camera will be rolling with Lumia Black, the newest in Nokia-based Windows Phone software - as soon as this afternoon for users across the United States. The firmware piece of this equation appears - for now - to be hitting the Lumia 1520.

While we're expecting additional updates to hit soon, for now we're seeing Lumia Black hitting the 1020 and a bit of firmware action for the Lumia 1520. Both of these devices are seeing this update series appearing over-the-air (aka OTA).

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is decidedly less exciting than the 1020 as it just includes "general performance and usability improvements". Users will be able to hit this update with ease by heading to Settings - Phone Update - Check of Updates - and make sure you're working with Wi-fi while you're on it.

As for the 1020 Lumia Black update you'll find a whole batch of upgrades ready for action. These include OS Build 10517 as well as the following bits and pieces:

    - Daily delighters: lock the screen rotation, close apps easily in the app switcher, use custom ringtones for messaging and mail, among other things
    - Update to Nokia Camera that combines Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Pro Camera. Available from the Store app.
    - Get the latest version of Nokia Glance Screen – see quick status notifications, for example, about calendar and messaging events on the lock screen.
    - Bluetooth 4.0 LE – preserve energy while staying connected via Bluetooth
    - Get enriched camera performance, enhanced battery monitoring, and other stability and usability improvements

Have a peek at our full Nokia Lumia 1020 review and dive down the rabbit hole with our more recent review of the Nokia Lumia 1520. It's time to go big!

'Samsung Galaxy' Note 3 breaks 10m barrier

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 has passed the 10m sales mark, taking just sixty days to set phablet sales records, and doubling the pace set by the Note 2 before it. A simultaneous launch across 58 countries didn’t hurt, Samsung says, but the company also credits the appeal of the large screen in North American and European markets, and the stylus input option for phonetic languages such as in China, as broadening demand for the large phone.

In fact, the Note 3 is the fourteenth phone to make it into Samsung’s “10m club”, with the earliest being the SGH-T100 clamshell of 2002. In more recent years, the Galaxy S, SII, S III, and S4, not to mention the Galaxy Note, Note II, and now Note 3 have all made it from Samsung’s Android range, though not all at the same speed.

It’s that pace which is most telling, arguably. Samsung has seen sales growth of both its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note ranges increase with each iteration, though it’s unclear how much faster demand for future devices can get.

Meanwhile, it’s also worth remembering that what different manufacturers count as sales aren’t always the same thing. In Samsung’s case, it tracks the sales into channel – i.e. the number of Note 3 handsets that go out to retailers, carriers, and others, to be sold on to end consumers – which means that it’s entirely possible that a percentage of these 10m Note 3 handsets are still sat on store shelves somewhere or in warehouses.

Nonetheless, considering the criticisms leveled at phablets in general, skepticism over whether consumers wanted a pen, and the increasing size of the Note 3 in particular, it’s undoubtedly a successful product for Samsung. Next up is to see whether the phone can maintain its momentum, or if the simultaneous launch meant that some of the long-tale has been prematurely sapped.

Danalock smart lock ditches keys in favor of smartphone tech

When it comes to securing the door on your home or office, most of us use plain locks that require keys. If you aren’t a fan of having to fumble in the dark with keys, you might be interested in a new smart lock called the Danalock. The lock is designed to need no keys to unlock or lock the door.

All the user needs is their smartphone and the Danalock smartphone application. The lock requires no special installation with an install time of only 10 minutes according to the manufacturer. The Danalock is designed to fit onto existing deadbolts and mortise locks on any door.

The smart lock requires no custom wiring. Once installed, it connects to the smartphone application using Bluetooth Smart or Z-Wave. The smartphone application allows the user to lock or unlock the door with the press of a virtual button. The app also allows the user to send virtual keys to other people who are running the smartphone app.

With those virtual keys, you can let friends or family into your home without giving them a physical key. One of the coolest features of the lock is that it can be set to sense when the homeowner approaches and automatically unlock the door. It can also be set to lock the door again once the person is inside their home automatically. There are two versions of the lock with one supporting Bluetooth Smart and the Z-Wave version designed to integrate into existing smartphone systems. The lock comes in square or round versions and is available now for $99. There are no monthly fees to use the lock.

LG Enact Android slider keeps Verizon in the QWERTY business

It’s not as if the LG Enact was the last device on the planet to offer a full physical keyboard with Android software – though the most recent entry with Verizon was the BlackBerry Q10. This LG device brings a sliding front panel that reveals a full QWERTY keyboard much in the same way that the Motorola DROID 4 did back in February of 2012. There’s also a near-identical device by the name of LG Mach that was released earlier this year – not that you’d need to know that if you’re sticking with Verizon.

This device works with many of the LG-made software innovations that’ve appeared on higher-end Android devices from the manufacturer over the past several months. You’ll be working with QSlide 2.0, meaning you can have two apps open at once, and QuickMemo – a note-taking service that also works over screenshots. LG has also added what’s called Q Translator, able to use this device’s camera to scan and translate text in 44 different languages.

On its back, the LG Enact works with a 5 megapixel camera able to record 1080p HD video, while a front-facing VGA camera works with LG’s “Cheese Shutter” – saying, “Cheese” takes a photo. You’ve got other software features for the camera added by LG like HDR, Panorama, VR Panorama, Beauty Shot, and Continuous Shot.

Up front the LG Enact features a 4-inch WVGA display at 800 x 400 pixels with a Corning Gorilla Glass pane to protect it. The slide-out keyboard features 5 rows of keys and dedicated keys for Google Search as well as Write & Share. Inside you’ll find a 2460mAh battery that should easily keep your usage time up to a full day.

This device is launching with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus dual-core processor at 1.2GHz clock speed and you’ll be rolling with 8GB of internal storage. There is a microSD card slot – if you’re worried about the tiny built-in storage – that you can use to expand your space by another 64GB. LG Enact is available starting this week for $19.99 USD on a two-year contract.

ZTE Open Firefox OS smartphone sells out

Though it just went up for sale on Friday, the ZTE Open is already sold out on eBay after just a weekend’s availability. Both US and UK eBay stores no longer have any stock of the Firefox OS-running phone, the Telegraph reports, which means consumers will need to wait until another production run is made before they can get their hands on one. Let it be known, however, there has been no announcement as to what the original stock numbers were.

Designed to be a budget smartphone, the Open from ZTE is completely unlocked and is web-based so downloading apps isn’t necessary. It features a 1GHz processor, a 3.5-inch screen, 512MB of storage, and a 3.2-megapixel camera. Nothing fancy, but it may fill in a gap for those who want a smartphone but can’t afford the standard price tag that comes along with them.

Earlier this year, Mozilla, the creators of the Firefox web browser, announced they would be creating an a mobile operating system. The open platform made it the OS of choice for ZTE, a Chinese phone manufacturer. A vice president at Mozilla recently indicated that the Open was designed for those who have never had a smartphone before but were looking to upgrade.

Meanwhile, sales of the Open began back in July in Spain, through carrier Telefonica, though the carrier is yet to detail exactly how many have been bought. Mozilla’s initial batch of 1,000 developer units sold out in less than a day last April.

The ZTE Open retails for $79.99 in the US, which might have been an appealing point but with no more phones in stock and no indicator as to when more will be available, it’s unclear as to what real impact this phone will have.

Galaxy Note III ship date tipped to quickly follow September reveal

It’s not often you get as much information on a top-tier release like Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note III well before its official reveal, but what we’ve got in abundance for this device is just that: essentially everything. The Galaxy Note III has been tipped this week by sources speaking with SamMobile for a launch and ship date immediately – or not long after – its reveal. The Samsung September 4th event the same week of IFA 2013 is all but confirmed to be the home of the first information on the device itself.

The Samsung Galaxy Note III has been rumored to carry a set of specifications that place it immediately in line after its predecessor from 2012. This massive device appears to continue getting bigger, working with a 5.7-inch display and 1020 x 1920 pixels across its face. Under the hood it’s been suggested that the Galaxy Note III will work with two different configurations: one for international audiences, the other for inside the USA.

The international version of the Galaxy Note III is said to work with Samsung’s newest Exynos “Octa” processor with two sets of four CPU cores. Meanwhile the USA-based iteration of the device will be launched with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, one that’ll likely make use of Qualcomm’s newest innovations in multi-carrier LTE support.

Inside you’ll also find 3GB of RAM, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and around the back a 13-megapixel camera the likes of which you may have already experienced on the Samsung Galaxy S 4. It’s also been suggested that there will no longer be a 16GB iteration of the Galaxy Note in this III series, the smallest version coming with 32GB of built-in data storage (and a microSD card slot for 64GB more, of course).

Sony Xperia i1 Honami specifications leaked in full

This week as we edge ever closer to the international tech conference known as IFA, we find devices like the Sony Xperia i1 leaking out in full – well before their official unveiling. While this device, also known as Sony Xperia “Honami”, is more than likely set to be revealed in full at an event on the 4th of September and given a full hands-on rundown by the press (including SlashGear) in Berlin not long after, today we’ve got an eye on a full specifications sheet as well as full-frame Sony-made press photos of the device, front and back.

Thanks to Daniel from the ePrice forums in China, we now know that Honami may not be the massive beast we thought it was. That entry into the Xperia universe may continue to be ruled by the Xperia Z Ultra – already out on the market today.

This i1 device is set to be a higher-powered edition of what’s presented in the Sony Xperia Z, but unlike the Sony Xperia X Ultra, Honami brings this next-level package with a 5-inch display – not all that unlike the original Z. With the Z Ultra you’re working with a massive 6.4-inch display – here with Honami (aka i1), you’ve got a 5-inch display, essentially the same as the Xperia Z.

So what’s the difference?

The Xperia Z works with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor – more than enough processing power to keep you up to speed with normal everyday apps. This device is one of the nicest machines to come out of the first half of 2013, to be sure – we reviewed the T-Mobile edition and the original edition as such. But here in the Xperia i1, you get an upgrade.

With the Xperia i1, Sony employs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core SoC. This is the same processor going into a collection of the second half of 2013′s biggest and best smartphones – most of them appearing with displays that fall into the “phablet” category. Because Sony’s entry brings this processor with a 5-inch display (a combo only otherwise seen in the Samsung Galaxy S 4 LTE-A (LTE Advanced), a device that’ll only see limited distribution. That’s a killer combination – one that’ll likely bust up the benchmark charts, to be sure.

Otherwise you’ve got a TRILUMINOUS Display with X-Reality technology from Sony, a 20.7 megapixel ExmorRS sensor on the back of the smartphone (that’s one massive camera) – paired with Sony G-Lens technology and BIONZ for mobile. Up front is a 2 megapixel camera with Exmor R, as well.

You’ll still be working with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, though there is a microSD card slot for storage expansion – of unknown max size, at the moment. You’ll also see NFC, MHL for HDMI output through the microUSB port, IPX5/7, and Wi-fi – and Miracast with Android 4.2.2 or higher, of course.

Look like a nice enough device to upgrade to, considering you probably already purchased the Xperia Z just this past month? How about those physical connector pins ready for a specialized dock? We’ll have to see what that’s all about next month – unless another leak hits before then (quite likely).

YouTube app update for iOS and Android brings “Cast” previews

Readying itself for the likes of Chromecast, PlayStation 4 (already on PS3), Google TV, and more, YouTube has been updated this week in its iOS and Android forms. This app already allowed the user to play any and all (save no-mobile) videos with ease, now the app will allow users to watch a video or Cast a video. This added bit of functionality had worked with devices like the Nexus Q and PlayStation 3 and Google TV in the past, but here we’re seeing a “preview” screen appearing along with the ability to add said video to a queue.

Updating the YouTube app on your Android or iOS device this week will allow you to take part in Google’s newest and cleanest user interface yet, this part of an overarching smoothing-out of Android apps that’ll be taking place over the rest of this summer. This update brings on the browsing of channels for playlists as well – that’ll bring you the “play ALL the videos” ability you’ve heard so much about (if you’ve never seen playlists on your desktop computer, that is).

One of the strangest updates to YouTube in this push is the second screen. Like you were using a Samsung Galaxy S 4 (or something similar), you’re now able to watch a YouTube video while you’re searching for another YouTube video to replace it. All you’ve got to do is hold your finger on a video and drag downward.

Now we get to see if such an ability is actually useful, or just there for kids to show their parents that they’ve got a better handle on the mobile universe than they once expected.

Once a video is placed in the lower right-hand corner of your display, you have the ability to go back to full screen with a swipe upward or to dismiss said video with a swipe to the right. This update should be available for both Android and iOS devices (like the iPhone and iPad) right this minute – have at it!

SIM card hack possible with a couple of text messages

Almost every phone in existence uses a SIM card, especially GSM-based devices. It turns out, that while SIM cards are encrypted, they can easily be breached with just a couple of text messages, and it apparently takes only a couple of minutes. The hack allows someone to listen in on calls and steal mobile data from a phone.

The hack consists of cloaking a text message so that it looks like it was sent from the carrier, and about a quarter of the time, an error message is sent back containing information about the SIM card that can be used to break into it. After that, another text can be sent that officially finishes the job, allowing hackers into your phone.

Security researcher Karsten Nohl of Security Research Labs discovered the exploit and says that up to 750 million handsets could be vulnerable to the hack. However, he notes that only SIM cards using older data encryption methods are at risk, while SIM cards using the newer Triple DES encryption are safe.

Out of all the mobile phones littering the world, about half of them use SIM cards that still use the older DES encryption. However, the exploit probably won’t last for long, since Nohl reported the vulnerability to the GSM Association, and they plan to speak with all carriers about fixing the exploit.

Nohl also plans to reveal his findings during the upcoming Black Hat conference. Don’t worry too much, though, as Nohl believes cyber criminals haven’t figured out the hack, and it would most likely take around six months for someone to figure it out. By then, carriers are hoping to have already patched the vulnerability.

Samsung Developers Conference aims to join big guns as cross-platform yearly event

In what’s fairly clear to be the spirit of such developer events as Apple’s WWDC and Google I/O, Samsung has this week announced the creation of their own Developers Conference. Starting October 27th and lasting two days, ending on the 29th, this event takes place right in the heart of San Francisco, aiming to bring in both developers and industry leaders to a software-centric series of events living in the Samsung universe.

At the moment, Samsung has only suggested that registration and full details for the event will be going live later this summer. Here in the early summer of 2013, Samsung’s full plans for their own attempt at joining the likes of Microsoft’s BUILD – aka their own yearly developer-centered conference – stay simple.

“Engage with industry leaders. Collaborate with fellow developers. Learn about new Samsung tools and SDKs. Create what’s next.” – Samsung Dev Con

Over at SamsungDevCon’s initial web presence, the company brings a similarly scant set of details. It is known at this early stage that this event will include more than just mobile products. It’s not just going to be about Samsung smartphones and tablets. This will be, according to Samsung, a “major, Samsung-side, cross-product (multi-screen) developer event.”

Sound like a good time to you? Have a peek at our Google I/O tag portal for one direction this multi-day event series might take, and our WWDC tag portal for another.

Moto X benchmarks leak specifications in black

Right here a the start of another week of Moto X leaks leading up to the official August 1st device reveal comes Motorola’s next hero phone spilling essentially in full, complete with specifications, benchmarks, and all. The device is captured by a leakster who has decided to photograph the phone with benchmarks running hot, 3DMark and AnTuTu included. BONUS: The FCC has been so kind as to drop some additional details on this machine here as well, dimensions galore!

The Moto X has been all but confirmed here by the FCC to be working with a body thats 128.5mm by 65mm large, this containing what’s almost certainly a non-removable battery that’s 2200 mAh space-wise. The FCC has spilled the full-on next-generation abilities of this machine to go 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-fi full-speed-ahead!

The iteration of this device appearing through this leak appears to be the GSM version – that being one of the basics that’ll be sold directly through Motorola complete with customizations on its outer hardware. This exact model likely has slightly less-than-final software aboard, but we can tell from here that it’s essentially running the newest version of Android available: 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

That means that the final device will either be running this newest Android as it exists on the Nexus 4 and Google Play editions of the Galaxy S 4 and HTC One, or it’s simply a tester (it really is, don’t fool yourself) that’ll eventually get an upgrade to a newer Android, 4.3 more likely.

Inside you’ll find the device-code XT1058 “Ghost”, this pointing toward it possibly being along AT&T’s line of innards. Inside you’ll also find 16GB of internal storage, working with NFC, and sporting two cameras. The front-facing camera comes in at 2.1-megapixels while the back-facing camera comes in at a cool 10.5-megapixels.

This next-generation camera should be encouraging for those guessing that this Motorola smartphone will ONLY be winning out on hardware customizability, not specifications market topping. That said, this machine wont be killing the rest of the market for processing abilities, running here a Qualcomm S4 Pro MSM8960DT 1.7GHz SoC with Adreno 320 GPU.

That’s dual-core and essentially one-upping the Nexus 4 without growing so powerful as the HTC One or Galaxy S 4, each of them working with the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600. This Moto X and its S4 Pro hit 18753 in AnTuTu in this tester’s leaks along with a 3DMark Ice Storm Extreme score of 7143 – not half bad!

ALso you’ll find this 4.3-inch display’s processor to be rolling out with 720p – aka 720 x 1184 pixels in this case, with a screen density at 320 dpi. Or at least that’s what AnTuTu says. It’s quite possible the machine’s display is 4.5-inches without on-screen buttons or 4.7 counting said buttons – but it’s all still up in the air until we see the final product!
