Microsoft Research Shows Off “DeLorean,” Its Tech For Building A Lag-Free Cloud Gaming Service

When looking to the future of gaming, few concepts get people as excited as the mythical “Netflix for gaming.” It’s a concept that we’ve seen in multiple forms, from OnLive’s early efforts to Sony’s new PlayStation Now service.

Serving up games from giant clusters of servers has several advantages over the traditional model of running a game on your own console or PC. It allows any device that can play streaming video to play high-def games; graphics can improve at a steady rate because improvements to a cloud architecture are easier to roll out than new console hardware; and games can be played instantly rather than waiting for ~20GB game downloads.

While Microsoft hasn’t gone as far as Sony in releasing its own streaming game platform, it’s shown interest in the concept before. Just this April, Microsoft showed off how developers of big-budget Xbox blockbusters like Titanfall are taking advantage of the Azure cloud platform to include better AI and physics without reducing performance overall.

Yesterday, Microsoft Research published a report that signals that the company is looking for ways that it could use its cloud expertise to create a unique cloud gaming platform at some point in the future. It discusses DeLorean, a “speculative execution engine” that makes it possible to delivery seemingly lag-free gameplay from the cloud despite the myriad sources of network latency between Microsoft’s Azure servers and a player’s device.

The report concludes that most users involved in the study couldn’t tell the difference between playing Doom 3 and Fable 3, two relatively action-heavy games, on a local system or from the cloud using DeLorean with 250 milliseconds of latency. That’s a game-changer — most gamers experiencing that kind of lag would throw their controllers in frustration.

How did Microsoft Research pull off such a feat? The key to DeLorean is the “speculative” descriptor. Video games generally can’t be buffered like a video from YouTube or Netflix because player actions affect what happens on screen — if I shoot my gun in Titanfall and the game showed me jumping, I’d be annoyed. But by looking at previous player input and sampling the most likely player actions, Microsoft found a way to predict the few actions you’re probably going to take and sends the video of each of them over ahead of time, letting it show players the most accurate guess as the game catches up.

The biggest problem with that solution is that it’s very bandwidth heavy: Microsoft notes that the bitrate for its predictive engine is 1.5-4.5 times higher than simply sending just the frames that a game knows to be accurate based on actual player input. That means you’d need a faster connection in order to play games through a theoretical Xbox streaming service than you would for PlayStation Now or Nvidia’s Grid, but you wouldn’t experience the stuttering that happens for gamers that don’t live close to the physical servers hosting those services.

Xbox One System Update: More Social Features and New Ways to Watch TV Available for Preview Members

Today we’re rolling out several of the new social and entertainment features we shared earlier this week, in addition to a few unannounced features, to the members previewing new system updates. Your input on feedback.xbox.com plays a big role in shaping these updates, which will roll out to all Xbox One owners in the coming months.

Some of the new features rolling out to our preview members include:

Parties – The Party App has been re-organized, so you can now see what activities everyone in your party is doing and tell more clearly who is playing in the same game with you.  You can also more quickly perform common actions like muting, joining, or sending game invites.  Also, Parties now have a Party Leader.  This person can change whether the party requires invitations, and she/he can remove others from the party.
New Friends Section – The new Friends section has been available for a few early access preview members and we’re expanding it to additional participants enrolled in the preview program. The new Friends section enables you to see at a glance what’s going on with your friends. You can stay up-to-date with your current activities, the most popular games your friends are playing, and a Gamerscore leaderboard to see who has improved their Gamerscore the most over the last 30 days. We’ll continue to roll this feature out to all participants in the coming updates.

Media Player – A new app will be available soon that enables you to play media files from either an attached USB device or from a network connected home media server that supports DLNA protocols. The preview version of the Media Player app will initially only support USB devices, with DLNA support coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and mkv which will be added by the end of the year. See below for additional file formats.

Xbox One Digital TV Tuner – Announced last week, this new hardware accessory will enter a limited preview program in Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain), in advance of its retail launch beginning in October.

Stream TV to SmartGlass – Launching first in markets receiving the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner, you will be able to stream your TV across your home network to your smartphones and tablets using the Xbox SmartGlass app. You can also pause, play and rewind as well as change channels, without interrupting gameplay on Xbox One.

Boot to TV – Now you will be able to set your console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.

Live TV Miniguide – For markets where OneGuide is available, a new mini guide on the bottom of the screen will display details about the TV content that is currently playing. You can quickly change channels and see what’s on other channels, while still watching TV.

SmartGlass Updates – You can now post status messages from the Activity Feed as well as add comments and share items from both your Activity Feed and from Game Clips. Along with the new comment and share features, a personalized Activity Feed has been added to your profile. Messages have been updated to a new layout supporting a full conversation view. Additionally, we are adding the ability to record game clips directly from the Now Playing bar. Finally, if you upgrade the app directly we have introduced a What’s New page highlighting the features of each release.

“Xbox On” in New Markets – Adding support for additional markets to use the “Xbox On” Kinect voice command to power on consoles: Australia, Canada (French), Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil – a top used feature.

Country Expansion – We’re doing a lot of work on the backend to prepare for Xbox One to launch in 29 new markets in the coming weeks.

Multiple GameDVR Deletes – You will be able to choose multiple GameDVR clips to delete at once in the Upload app.

Save your Avatar Gamerpic – A new option is now available to save Avatar GamerPics to your OneDrive.
Settings Updates – New options help you manage your controllers and accessories. Also, Instant Sign-In is being moved to Settings, to the Sign-in, security & Passkey area.

Bandwidth Usage Display – Located in Network Settings under the Troubleshooting column, Bandwidth Usage will show you how much bandwidth your Xbox One is consuming over a period of time. This is useful if you want to track against bandwidth caps set by ISPs in certain markets.

Once again, we can’t thank you enough for your continued input and feedback. We look forward to sharing more when the next Xbox One system update rolls out to the larger community.

HTC One X+ KitKat update unofficial, Android updates are over

According to the UK office of HTC, the more powerful of the two USA-based HTC One X devices will no longer be receiving Android updates of any kind. This is the HTC One X+, a device which works with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, one available from AT&T, one which will not be seeing KitKat. This comes after a short rumor period in which it was affirmed that HTC’s One X+ would be getting this update - now HTC confirms that this is not true.

According to HTC UK, the HTC One X+ “will not receive further Android updates”, and furthermore, it “will remain on the current version of Android” for the foreseeable future. This means that if you do plan on updating to a new version of Android in the future on this device, you’re going to need to hack.

While this wasn’t the most popular phone in its category - by a long shot - the HTC One X+ does still have a dedicated set of developers working in the wild that’ll help you make with the change-up at your leisure. Of course that sort of modification of your smartphone will result in a break in your warrantee.

The HTC One X+ update cut was also confirmed by the HTC office in the Netherlands, all the way back on the 8th of January. We had a review of this device back in December of 2012 where, regardless of the original having been released in April of that year, we still found the X+ to be an impressive handset to behold. Will this device remain a worthy competitor with the rest of the mid-tier now that its software has been halted? If its price remains shockingly low, yes.

Apple acquires SnappyLabs for quick-shot photography

This week the folks responsible for picking up companies at Apple have made a purchase - the SnappyLabs group responsible for quick-shot photos in iOS devices. This app was titled “SnappyCam” and can still be accessed for a short time - if you’re rooted. As for the real-deal app on the iTunes App Store, you’ may very well be out of luck. Until Apple incorporates the app’s abilities into their own naive camera app, that is.

What we’re seeing first is the disappearance of the SnappyCam app earlier this week. Their websites were erased from the earth, and anonymous sources spoke with TechCrunch on the matter, suggesting that Apple had scooped up the whole lot. It wasn’t long after this set of events that Apple confirmed with Re/code that they’d picked the site up with their usual note:

”Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do no discuss our purpose or plans.” - Apple

The SnappyLabs founder let it be known that their next-generation handling of JPG files. A blog post from the founder contained the following on the subject - until recently, of course:

”First we studied the fast discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithms … We then extended some of that research to create a new algorithm that’s a good fit for the ARM NEON SIMD co-processor instruction set architecture. The final implementation comprises nearly 10,000 lines of hand-tuned assembly code, and over 20,000 lines of low-level C code. (In comparison, the SnappyCam app comprises almost 50,000 lines of Objective C code.)

JPEG compression comprises two parts: the DCT (above), and a lossless Huffman compression stage that forms a compact JPEG file. Having developed a blazing fast DCT implementation, Huffman then became a bottleneck. We innovated on that portion with tight hand-tuned assembly code that leverages special features of the ARM processor instruction set to make it as fast as possible.” - SnappyCam founder John Papandriopoulos

The original app worked with HUD control connectivity, volume shutter connectivity, and high and low speeds. This app allows 60 photos a second, pushes through 6x zoom in fast lossless mode, and infinite shooting mode to boot. We’ll likely see some next-level photography action in the next iPhone - surprise!

Qualcomm Ultra Sound NotePad: paper to tablet transfer in realtime

This upcoming week at CES 2014, Qualcomm is planning on demonstrating their Snapdragon 805 proccessor abilities out with several new technologies, one of which is Ultra Sound NotePad. Using this processor's abilities tied to this unique tablet (a developer test tablet, for the moment), ultrasonic sounds created by a digital pen are able to be picked up and transferred to replications of drawings done on a piece of paper directly down to an app. You might have to see this to understand what it's all about.

While previous solutions relied on the pen's ability to record, then transfer to an app at a later time, this solution transfers data in realtime. No longer will you have to write on the tablet itself or wait for your drawings to be processed from the pen to access them. Here you'll be able to make a drawing - or series of notes - on a piece of paper and have them instantly appear on the tablet nearby.

This will make an extremely interesting set of use-cases available to artists in the near future, that's for certain. Where before now the only solution for creating real paper-and-pen art visible on the computer was to scan your finalized work of art after it was made, this solution makes an instant double.

One perfect use-case for this technology will be for comic artists who otherwise have relied on multiple step processes to transfer their works from paper to the web. Many artists still rely on the sensations and quality delivered by working with real ink delivery to a piece of paper rather than moving in to a whole new world with digital stylus-to-screen bits like Samsung's S Pen technology (as seen in the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 most recently) or NVIDIA's newer Tegra Note Stylus technology - as seen most recently in the EVGA Tegra Note 7.
For a full-on delivery of how this Qualcomm technology works, we'll be heading to CES 2014 for an up-close experience. Stay tuned for our full CES 2014 coverage starting this weekend, Qualcomm included!

Radionomy buys Winamp and Shoutcast

Fans of music services Winamp and Shoutcast received some bad news in late November when it was announced that AOL would shut down both the services. The original announcement said that Winamp would be shuttered by December 20, giving fans of the service only a month to say their goodbyes. The next day, word surfaced that Microsoft was in contention to purchase Winamp and Shoutcast.

We even heard that the negotiations were in their final stages about a month after the announcement that Winamp and Shoutcast were being closed. The announcement that Microsoft had completed the deal never came. Reports are now coming in that both Winamp and Shoutcast have been sold to Radionomy.

Radionomy is an international aggregator of online radio stations that has a headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The purchase hasn't been announced officially just yet. The tip that the purchase was happening came when the name servers for Winamp were changed to Radionomy.

Sources who claim to be familiar with the deal say that it could be finalized as early as Friday. Radionomy currently has 6000 stations in its catalog. Shoutcast on the other hand has 50,000 channels in its catalog. Winamp is expected to be used to help the company deliver new services to listeners.

Fitbit iPhone 5s update teases wearable data without the band

In a move rather similar to Nike’s efforts with their own wearable sports tracker and app, Fitbit has updated their app to give basic fitness data without the Fitbit band itself. You’ll be seeing basic data with the help of what Fitbit doesn’t directly suggest is the iPhone 5s’s M7 motion co-processor, but gives a bit wink towards nonetheless.

This move allows users to get in on and get a taste for the Fitbit universe without jumping all the way in with the Fitbit wearable itself. This version of the app’s new feature goes by the name MobileTrack, while normal connectivity still works with Fitbit’s full line of activity trackers and he Aria Smart Scale.

If you happen to have a new iPad, you may very well find your data reacting the same way with this newest update as they too work with the same M7 architecture inside. You’ll find this app just as free as it’s ever been, too.

This update to the iOS app also brings a collection of other connected oddities as well. Users can now work with a redesigned set of tracker settings as well as sign-up and sign-in portals. You’ll find the ability to see people’s profiles in the Friend Finder list, while swiping on friends in your leaderboard now allows you to cheer, taunt, or message them.

The newest version of Fitbit (2.1) works with a redesigned set of Silent Alarm settings including set, switch, edit, and remove, and you’ll find a new ability to set your own custom water goal. Have at it!

Archive vintage games collection enhanced: holiday blues defeated!

This week the folks at the Internet Archive have released a new collection of in-browser emulated games, a whole mess of vintage titles released recently into the public domain. This collection runs on an emulator based on MESS software, working with JSMESS (Javascript MESS) allowing most modern browsers to play immediately. Most games work with a simple tapping of your space bar and arrow keys on your average keyboard.

At the moment you'll have to suffer through the lack of sound on this collection of games, but messing with them yourself in your own software environment is not out of the question. The IA collection is optimized for their own super-simple environment so that users can enjoy these ultra-tiny games as quickly as possible.

The current collection consists of games from the Atari 2600, the Atari 7800 ProSystem, the original ColecoVision, the Magnavox Odyssey2 - aka the Philips Videopac G7000, and the Astrocade. Users will be able to browse through each system or by subject or keyword.

Just this week a new wave of games has made this vintage collection burst at the seams, with a load of Atari 2600 games coming up fully prepared to be played instantly. Each game works as a download - if you're logged in - or as an in-browser emulation.

Let us know if you're jumping in to have a go, and be sure to note which games you're finding most entertaining! It's a strange, strange world we're living in when the oldest games can turn out to be the most enticing in an odd situation like this.

Tesla Model S software updated with power fluctuation safeguard

Tesla's Model S has been the subject of note when it comes to electric cars, lately due to a spat of fires that have affected a few of the units. Recently, a garage caught fire containing a Model S that was charging, something Tesla maintains was not caused by the Model S and that the Orange County Fire Authority says was related to the wall-charging system. Following this latest incident, Tesla Motors has pushed out a software update.

With this software update, the Model S' onboard charging system will be able to detect what Tesla Motors calls unexpected fluctuations from the power source. When one of these fluctuations take place, the charging current will be dropped 25-percent, taking, as an example, a 40 amp rate and reducing it to 30 amps in an effort to avoid hazards.

Said the statement Tesla published with the software update: "This charge is designed to help protect you even when a problem exists that is outside of the car or charging electronics. It should significantly increase robustness and safety in the unlikely situation that a home wiring system, receptacle, adapter or cord is unable to meet its rated current capacity."

Other fires have also affected the Model S this year, starting with one that took place near Seattle due to debris in the road damaging the battery. Two other fires have also taken place, one later on in Tennessee and another in Mexico following a crash. While all of the fires resulted from incidents of some variety, the NHTSA has still elected to give the fires a careful look over.

AT&T and Nokia release Lumia Black update for Lumia 1020; Lumia 1520 also gets new firmware

This week the most powerful camera phone on the planet - so to speak - has recieved a software update from Microsoft. The Nokia Lumia 1020 with its beastly back-facing camera will be rolling with Lumia Black, the newest in Nokia-based Windows Phone software - as soon as this afternoon for users across the United States. The firmware piece of this equation appears - for now - to be hitting the Lumia 1520.

While we're expecting additional updates to hit soon, for now we're seeing Lumia Black hitting the 1020 and a bit of firmware action for the Lumia 1520. Both of these devices are seeing this update series appearing over-the-air (aka OTA).

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is decidedly less exciting than the 1020 as it just includes "general performance and usability improvements". Users will be able to hit this update with ease by heading to Settings - Phone Update - Check of Updates - and make sure you're working with Wi-fi while you're on it.

As for the 1020 Lumia Black update you'll find a whole batch of upgrades ready for action. These include OS Build 10517 as well as the following bits and pieces:

    - Daily delighters: lock the screen rotation, close apps easily in the app switcher, use custom ringtones for messaging and mail, among other things
    - Update to Nokia Camera that combines Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Pro Camera. Available from the Store app.
    - Get the latest version of Nokia Glance Screen – see quick status notifications, for example, about calendar and messaging events on the lock screen.
    - Bluetooth 4.0 LE – preserve energy while staying connected via Bluetooth
    - Get enriched camera performance, enhanced battery monitoring, and other stability and usability improvements

Have a peek at our full Nokia Lumia 1020 review and dive down the rabbit hole with our more recent review of the Nokia Lumia 1520. It's time to go big!

'Galaxy S3' software update now re-distributing Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

After a bit of a delay earlier this year, the folks responsible for bringing on software updates to the Samsung Galaxy smartphone universe have re-started the push for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to the Galaxy S III. This release will bring a number of feature updates and improvements to the hardware and – for some – completely skips over the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. The difference is small, but the oddity is great.

Under the hood this update brings updates that’ll have the Galaxy S III (or Galaxy S3 if you prefer) up to a whole new level. This includes support for the Samsung Galaxy Gear, first of all. That’s the smartwatch you’ve been seeing as connected to the Samsung Galaxy Note III in commercials every 10 minutes on television, if you watch that sort of thing.

You’ll also find new screen modes as adapted and fit from the Galaxy S 4: Adapt Display and Professional Photo modes included. You’ll get a new Samsung Keyboard, new lockscreen abilities, and a whole new camera mode: Sound and Shot. Sound and Shot was born with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and creates a still image with a sound background – quite unique.

This update will be bringing on a new Driving Mode, a Settings interface that replicates the Samsung Galaxy S4 exactly, and full-screen Samsung apps as well. The Samsung S-Voice update from the Samsung Galaxy S4 is also included in this update which will be rolling out this week.

If you work with a Samsung Galaxy S III, all you’ve got to do is sit back and wait. This update will be appearing OTA (Over the Air) inside this week – fingers crossed!

Lenovo to start bundling Windows 8 Start menu replacement Pokki

Windows 8 users tend to be polarized on one particular issue – the lack of a Start Menu. Some don’t mind its absence, but others have taken issue with the choice and sought alternatives. One such alternative has been SweetLabs’ Pokki replacement menu, something that Lenovo will begin including pre-loaded on its Windows 8 PCs.

The move might satisfy some users who find the absence of a start menu disconcerting, but could be seen as unwanted bloatware by others, particularly due to its hocking of various apps. Pokki displays apps within the menu, encouraging users to download items like – for example – Angry Birds. The offerings show up alongside the bottom of the menu with an “Install” button above them.

According to Bloomberg, Lenovo plans to start including the SweetLabs software on Windows 8 computers in the “next several weeks,” with the first round going out to countries that speak English. Eventually Pokki will also make its way onto other Lenovo computers as well, though when that will happen hasn’t been specified.

In addition to the apps, something that seems to compete with Microsoft’s Windows Store, is also a more common array of items one expects to see in the Start Menu: Control Panel, Computer, the various folders (Documents, Music, etc.), and some preferred applications, whether that be a browser or word processor or something else entirely.

Pokki became available when Windows 8 went live, and has since then been downloaded about 3 million times. According to the company’s co-founder and CEO Chester Ng, Lenovo approached SweetLabs during an Intel Capital conference. The company is also said to be in talks with other manufacturers, and may find its way onto more computers in the future.

YouTube app update for iOS and Android brings “Cast” previews

Readying itself for the likes of Chromecast, PlayStation 4 (already on PS3), Google TV, and more, YouTube has been updated this week in its iOS and Android forms. This app already allowed the user to play any and all (save no-mobile) videos with ease, now the app will allow users to watch a video or Cast a video. This added bit of functionality had worked with devices like the Nexus Q and PlayStation 3 and Google TV in the past, but here we’re seeing a “preview” screen appearing along with the ability to add said video to a queue.

Updating the YouTube app on your Android or iOS device this week will allow you to take part in Google’s newest and cleanest user interface yet, this part of an overarching smoothing-out of Android apps that’ll be taking place over the rest of this summer. This update brings on the browsing of channels for playlists as well – that’ll bring you the “play ALL the videos” ability you’ve heard so much about (if you’ve never seen playlists on your desktop computer, that is).

One of the strangest updates to YouTube in this push is the second screen. Like you were using a Samsung Galaxy S 4 (or something similar), you’re now able to watch a YouTube video while you’re searching for another YouTube video to replace it. All you’ve got to do is hold your finger on a video and drag downward.

Now we get to see if such an ability is actually useful, or just there for kids to show their parents that they’ve got a better handle on the mobile universe than they once expected.

Once a video is placed in the lower right-hand corner of your display, you have the ability to go back to full screen with a swipe upward or to dismiss said video with a swipe to the right. This update should be available for both Android and iOS devices (like the iPhone and iPad) right this minute – have at it!

Samsung Developers Conference aims to join big guns as cross-platform yearly event

In what’s fairly clear to be the spirit of such developer events as Apple’s WWDC and Google I/O, Samsung has this week announced the creation of their own Developers Conference. Starting October 27th and lasting two days, ending on the 29th, this event takes place right in the heart of San Francisco, aiming to bring in both developers and industry leaders to a software-centric series of events living in the Samsung universe.

At the moment, Samsung has only suggested that registration and full details for the event will be going live later this summer. Here in the early summer of 2013, Samsung’s full plans for their own attempt at joining the likes of Microsoft’s BUILD – aka their own yearly developer-centered conference – stay simple.

“Engage with industry leaders. Collaborate with fellow developers. Learn about new Samsung tools and SDKs. Create what’s next.” – Samsung Dev Con

Over at SamsungDevCon’s initial web presence, the company brings a similarly scant set of details. It is known at this early stage that this event will include more than just mobile products. It’s not just going to be about Samsung smartphones and tablets. This will be, according to Samsung, a “major, Samsung-side, cross-product (multi-screen) developer event.”

Sound like a good time to you? Have a peek at our Google I/O tag portal for one direction this multi-day event series might take, and our WWDC tag portal for another.
