Blackberry to divest most of its Canadian properties

The latest page in Blackberry's business woes comes in the form of a property announcement, with the company revealing plans to divest the majority of its real estate located in Canada. This follows some pretty big layoffs, as well as a recent announcement that it'll be selling five of its buildings to the University of Waterloo for $41 million Canadian.

The divestment will be taking place in part with CBRE, a real estate services company. Blackberry didn't say how much it is looking to make from the sales, but such a business move comes amidst months of hardship and the need to offset poor numbers. The real estate divestment will come in two forms.

Blackberry says, according to Reuters, that it will both sell vacant assets and initiate sale-leaseback sales, with the properties comprising more than 3 million square feet of office space. Where these buildings are located also wasn't specified, but given that most of Blackberry's physical locations hover in proximity to its Waterloo headquarters, one can assume these buildings are in the same general area.

As for the buildings it has already agreed to sell, the University of Waterloo has said its campus will grow 300,000 square feet as a result, as well as gaining 1000 parking spaces. Good news for the university, and good news for whatever companies acquires its current properties, but another sad tale in the long story of Blackberry in a world of shifting mobile preferences.

Facebook Trending brings popular topics to light, rolling out now

Following the inclusion of hashtags, Facebook began testing a Trending box during the late summer last year, showing popular topics in the upper corner of one's account much in the same way the aforementioned microblogging site does. Fast-forward a handful of months, and Facebook has now begun rolling the new feature out in certain (yet unspecified) countries, while mobile users will have to keep waiting as testing is still underway.

The idea behind Trending is simple, and could be handy for those who want to see the bigger social picture rather than live in the bubble of their friend's list. Trending items, which are topics popular in the moment, whether recent events, news, or something else entirely, are listed in a small box in the top-right corner of one's main page -- not quite in the News Feed, but close enough.

Not all will be seeing the same trending topics, however, with the list -- which is slight in nature with only a handful of topics -- being personalized for each user. Some topics displayed with on Facebook-as-a-whole trends, but others will be trends within topics you're interested in, as determined by your past Facebook activity, likes, and other applicable settings.

With each trending topic comes a small blurb that explains what the topic is about, and clicking it will then pull up posts related to the topic, making the social network altogether Twitter-esque. If you're not seeing the box yet, hang tight -- Facebook hasn't said which regions are getting it, and when it will roll out to others, nor when it'll be showing up on mobile.

Twitter rolling out refreshed web design based on mobile inspiration

Tis a mobile world we live in, one filled with apps that are, more often than not, updated frequently and a degree or two separated from their Web-based counterpart's design (should such a counterpart exist, that is). Such has been the case with Twitter up until today, with a simple announcement being fired off this afternoon ushering in a new Web design reminiscent of its latest mobile offerings.

It is a simple announcement in and of itself, but a big one at that, with the design getting a refreshed look that is flatter, cleaner, and perhaps more streamlined than its original iteration. The announcement was made in a tweet under Twitter's official account alongside a screenshot previewing the new design. Says the tweet: "We're now rolling out a refreshed twitter.com reflecting the look & feel of our iOS & Android apps."

Not all users are seeing the change yet -- based on anecdotal evidence, it would seem many are still seeing the original design. The change is taking place on a rolling basis, however, and so some will have to wait a bit longer before the change makes its way around. Twitter hasn't provided a general time frame for this roll out, so it's a waiting game at this point.

In addition to the refreshed web design, a slight change has been made to user ability to control the design in Settings. Under the applicable menu, users can now select an accent color for their own account, which comes alongside the previously-existing ability to set a background and choose a profile picture.

Nintendo 3DS game sales jumped 45% in 2013 as hardware hit record numbers

Nintendo has reported its 2013 3DS sales for the year, with the maker hitting a sweet-spot record leading into what it anticipates to be a strong 2014. Last year, Nintendo had the highest ever 3DS sales in the United States, with game sales jumping a huge 45-percent, as well. The company had detailed its game release plans for this year, starting with the full game launch of Bravely Default on February 7.

Nintendo 3DS sales, which includes the 2DS and the 3DS XL, exceeded 11.5 million sales in the United States, breaking the thus-far lifetime record for the company. Game sales were nearly as equally phenomenal for the company, with in excess of 16 million combined physical and digital games for the aforementioned hardware being sold over the course of last year -- a 45-percent jump over 2012's sales for the same hardware.

In addition to Bravely Default, which has been available as a demo in the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo will be launching Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, followed by Yoshi's New Island on March 14. Also slated is Disney Magical World, a Disney-centric game that will be familiar to those who enjoy common social network games, that will be launching on April 11.

Said Nintendo America's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing Scott Moffitt: "Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players. We're not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3DS are still come."

Lenovo ThinkPad 8 is a three-mode tablet with Quickshot cover

Tablets are a dime a dozen, something that makes room for tablets that take their time, in a manner of speaking. Such is the case with Lenovo's ThinkPad 8, and 8-inch tablet that is promised as offering a "full PC experience" while on the go. The small form-factor allows for easy portability, but the company says that the device's design is premium quality, including machine-cut aluminum and a unique Quickshot Cover.

The ThinkPad 8 can be used in Desktop Mode with a keyboard and external display, or in Tablet Mode, which is exactly what it sounds like. The idea is that professional users, which is Lenovo's target base with this product, can find uses for the device is any situation, whether they need something on the go or want to use it while parked in an office. A dock can be used for the latter, making it easier to use it as a regular desktop computer.

As mentioned, the ThinkPad 8 can be had with a Quickshot Cover, which is an interesting cover that allows the tablet to be convered into a third mode -- Tent Mode. With the Quickshot Cover, the user can take a picture by "peeling" back the cover to bring the 8-megapixel camera into view. This motion triggers the camera's app, making it easy to take a picture without completely opening the cover and manually launching the related software.

As far as specifications go, the ThinkPad 8 tablet comes with an 8.3-inch 1920 x 1200 pixels display. There's both microHDMI and Miracast for playing content elsewhere. Under the hood, this small Lenovo tablet has an Intel Bay Trail quad-core processor and up to 128GB of internal storage space. There's a microUSB 3.0 port, LTE, and Windows 8 Pro. The tablet will be available later this month for $449 USD.

Acer Iconia B1-720 7-inch Android tablet is slimmed down and faster

Joining the newly announced A1-830 tablet is the new Acer Iconia B1-720, a smaller 7-inch tablet that is otherwise fairly similar to its larger A1 sibling. As with the A1, the Iconia B1-720 offers Jelly Bean and the promise of both high performance and battery life. Rather than the aluminum design, however, the B1 makes things a bit more classy with a textured and silky finish.

The Acer B1 tablet features a dual-core 1.3GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, and whilst internal storage space comes in at 16GB, there's a micro SD expansion slot with support for up to 32GB. The software is Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean, the same loaded on the new Iconia A1, and as always, performance is promised to be solid and smooth for activity ranging from Web browsing to mobile gaming.

Acer is aiming this particular model at families, those new to the world of tablets, or as an offering for those who don't want to give their kids access to a more expensive slate. This is the third-generation of the B1, clocking in as slimmer than the previous model with a boost in performance and a promise for better sound. There's a single speaker, as well as a microphone and front-facing camera, the resolution of which wasn't detailed.

Connectivity is basic with WiFi, and a tablet is being sold separately for this latest B1 model. The front portion of the tablet will be available in red and grey, while the cover will be available in multiple unspecified colors that doubles as a stand. The tablet will be available from retailers later this month for $129.99 USD and CAD.

Lenovo Vibe Z is company’s first LTE smartphone

Lenovo, quite the busy bee for CES 2014, has introduced its first-ever smartphone with LTE support, the Vibe Z. With this super thin handset comes a variety of features, including gesture control and rapid speeds. Coming alongside this flagship offering are a few other models, namely the 6-inch S930 phablet, the so-called "tweener" S650 mid-range handset, and the 5-inch A859.

Lenovo has been making a diligent effort in the smartphone market, and with that comes a milestone of sorts for the company: the Vibe Z, a thin and fast handset loaded with custom software in addition to Android 4.3. With the Vibe Z comes a 5.5-inch IPS Full HD display with 20/20 Vision technology and 400 pixels-per-inch. There's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz processor alongside 2GB of RAM and up to 16GB of internal storage space. Unfortunately, there's no microSD expansion slot, so you'll have to make do with what is available, or cloud storage beyond that.

Around back the Vibe Z features a 13-megapixel camera with a 5-megapixel offering on the front of the device, as well Lenovo's Super Camera and Super Gallery apps. As far as the LTE connectivity goes, which is the Vibe Z's biggest bragging point, download speeds up to 150Mbit/s and upload speeds up to 50Mbit/s are offered. There's a micro-SIM card, as well as support for GSM/UMTS networks up to 2100. Other connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
Beyond the Vibe Z, Lenovo has also shown off the S650, S930, and the A859. The latter among these stands out on its own, with Lenovo calling it an "all-around performance model". With this comes a 5-inch 720p IPS display and Android 4.2. The S650 is a mid-range offering with a 4.7-inch qHD IPS display, and the S930 is a higher-end phablet with a 6-inch 720p display. Both S-series and the Vibe Z have a rear cover that feels like fabric, as well as a silver body.

The Vibe Z will be available staring in February at $549+ USD, while the S-series handsets are available now at $229 USD and $319 USD, respectively. The S859 is available now starting at $219 USD.

Moto X scores perma-price cut with the dawn of 2014

As everyone awakens bleary-eyed from a celebratory night of ushering in the new year, Motorola has announced a permanent price cut for its no-contract Moto X flagship handset. Whilst a bit too late for those of you who grabbed one of these customizable phones for the holidays, the holdouts among us who have been waiting for a price drop can get the device for $399 USD off contract.

Motorola is inviting all to "ring in the new year" with a sans-contract Moto X, the price of which is now $399, with the handset maker promising it applies to any color combination. This under cuts some of Motorola's competitors' handsets, with the company taking a direct jab at the iPhone 5s and GALAXY S 4 pricing -- both are higher than the new Moto X pricing.

This contrasts with yester-year's $499 pricing, and brings it closer to the Nexus 5, financially speaking. You'll still need to drop another $100 if you want to get the fancy wood backing, and this price drop applies to the 16GB model. If you want to get the no-contract 32GB model, you're going to be shelling out $449.99 instead.

At the end of the day, the price drop gives consumers another solid handset option -- off contract -- that doesn't break the bank. Whether buyers will be jumping aboard the Moto X ship this new year or going with the slightly-less-expensive Nexus 5 is yet to be seen, but for those dreaming of a special color scheme or some polished bamboo goodness, Motorola has used the dawning of the new year to make its wares a bit more attractive.

Tesla Model S software updated with power fluctuation safeguard

Tesla's Model S has been the subject of note when it comes to electric cars, lately due to a spat of fires that have affected a few of the units. Recently, a garage caught fire containing a Model S that was charging, something Tesla maintains was not caused by the Model S and that the Orange County Fire Authority says was related to the wall-charging system. Following this latest incident, Tesla Motors has pushed out a software update.

With this software update, the Model S' onboard charging system will be able to detect what Tesla Motors calls unexpected fluctuations from the power source. When one of these fluctuations take place, the charging current will be dropped 25-percent, taking, as an example, a 40 amp rate and reducing it to 30 amps in an effort to avoid hazards.

Said the statement Tesla published with the software update: "This charge is designed to help protect you even when a problem exists that is outside of the car or charging electronics. It should significantly increase robustness and safety in the unlikely situation that a home wiring system, receptacle, adapter or cord is unable to meet its rated current capacity."

Other fires have also affected the Model S this year, starting with one that took place near Seattle due to debris in the road damaging the battery. Two other fires have also taken place, one later on in Tennessee and another in Mexico following a crash. While all of the fires resulted from incidents of some variety, the NHTSA has still elected to give the fires a careful look over.

NASA’s ISS 'Robonaut' 2 will soon have a pair of legs

Robots might not be at a Terminator level of sophistication, but the technology is growing rapidly, and NASA has revealed what it calls “another milestone” in humanoid space robotics: legs for the Robonaut 2, more commonly called R2. The agency’s engineers are presently working on the climbing legs, which will give the robot a new degree of mobile freedom, enabling it to perform more tasks than currently possible.

For now, the Robonaut 2 is attached to a support pillar, which you can see in the image above, giving it a degree of mobility while it is tested on the International Space Station, where it has been since early 2011. The new legs, which appear similar in design to the arms and don’t so much have feet as they do forward-flexing appendages, will allow the robot to do more both inside and outside of the ISS.

The development is being funded by the space agency’s Human Exploration and Operations and Space Technology mission directorates. Lending a bit of functionality akin to that of its partial namesake, the foot-like appendages have end effectors, which allow it to utilize sockets both inside and outside of the ISS, as well as handrails. The legs have a total span of 9-feet, and each leg has seven joints.

Said NASA’s associate administrator for space technology in Washington Michael Gazarik: “NASA has explored with robots for more than a decade, from the stalwart rovers on Mars to R2 on the station. Our investment in robotic technology development is helping us to bolster productivity by applying robotics technology and devices to fortify and enhance individual human capabilities, performance and safety in space.”

Scientists create most accurate clock in the world

Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have created what they say is the most accurate clock anywhere in the world, able to keep its ticking rate to a variation of less than two parts per every quintillion. This number, not only too infinitesimal for the average mind to comprehend, is also 10 times more accurate than any other clock out there.

The clock achieves this by using the element ytterbium, something that provides it with stability that the scientists say could have uses beyond simply telling time. Unlike clocks that use pendulums, the ytterbium clock utilizes approximately 10,000 rare-earth atoms cooled to 10/millionth of a single degree over absolute zero and then snared in a laser light optical lattice.

This light signal is them beamed at a precise frequency, moving electrons in the caesium atoms. Such is essentially the clock’s version of a tick, only the ticks number at 518 trillion times per second. This causes the stability, with larger numbers of atoms being responsible for a more stable rate. Furthermore, to get to this accurate rate, timing takes only one second rather than about 5 days, which is the current standard.

Said Andrew Ludlow, a physicist for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, “The stability of the ytterbium lattice clocks opens the door to a number of exciting practical applications of high-performance timekeeping.” Among these could be navigational uses, for example. Information about the clock was published in the journal Science.

Zuckerberg introduces Internet.org partnership, wants to connect the world

Facebook‘s founder Mark Zuckerberg has introduced Internet.org, a partnership that spans the globe with a goal of connecting the entire world to the Internet. The collective encompasses many big name members, among them being Samsung, Nokia, and Opera, all of whom will work together to connect the two-thirds of the world that don’t have access to the Internet.

Presently, a tad over a third of the world’s population is connected the Internet, a number that comes in at 2.7 billion. That leaves another two-thirds without connection, with the reasons for this varying based on location and such. The rate of Internet adoption is said to be less than 9-percent per year, a number those behind Internet.org hope to see increase as a result of their efforts.

Said Zuckerberg: “Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect. There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy. Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making internet access available to those who cannot currently afford it.”

Under the initiative, members will work together to develop technologies – and their adoption – that make it cheaper for individuals to connect to the Internet while reducing the cost of data delivery. Among this effort will be the development of higher-quality smartphones that come with a smaller price tag, and partnerships to expand access in what Facebook calls areas that are lacking.

The technologies being development will also focus on more efficient use of data, decreasing the amount that apps and such use to help keep over all data use – and thusly costs – down. This will include things like cache systems and compression tools. And finally, the members will work towards creating and sustaining business models that facilitate Internet access.

LG Display unveils world’s first Quad HD AH-IPS LCD for smartphones

LG Display has announced the creation of the world’s first 2566 x 1440 panel for smartphones, a Quad HD AH-IPS LCD. This massively high resolution accompanies a 5.5-inch panel, giving it a 538ppi. As such, says the display maker, this is both the highest resolution and the highest pixels per inch of any mobile display created thus far.

The Quad HD brings clearer images than what you get with the common 1280 x 720 resolution found on many handsets, something LG Display says results in “more delicate colors” in addition to better contrast and vividness than smartphones currently offer. All of this culminates in images that are said to be both more crisp and life-like, as well as video quality that is Blu-ray equivalent.

Furthermore, the Quad HD panel is said to provide users with a full view of Web pages that is equivalent to what you get on a PC, no distortion or clipping present. Comparing this with Full HD displays, current users would only get access to about three quarters of the full screen experience, leaving a full quarter to be desired. Obviously, this has benefits for zooming in content.

Text is sharper on the Quad HD than on Full HD (and lower) displays, for example. Such a creation comes at a time when demand for larger screens is increasing in the market. The research firm DisplaySearch estimates that LTPS-based handset displays will hit a record of 765 million units being shipped in 2014, something fueled by desire for not only larger screens, but also higher resolution and lower power consumption.

As far as size goes, the panel is 1.21mm thick, and has a 1.2mm bezel in LCM, also earning it the titles of slimmest and narrowest available. The 5.2-inch Full HD panel that LG released last month, for example, is 12-percent thicker than the Quad HD.

Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group Dr. Byeong-koo Kim said: “LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”

Gmail gets full-screen compose option by popular demand

In October, Google rolled out a new Gmail compose box that would allow users to reference past emails and other content in the account while composing. While it was a handy change and addressed issues many had complained about, others weren’t happy when it became the default option. Now, by popular demand, a full-screen option has been added.

Google announced the new feature today on Google+, saying that it was prodded to add a full-screen compose window by feedback it received from users. The option doesn’t do away with the current pop-out compose window, which is fixed to the right side of the inbox, instead giving a second option for those who prefer it.

With the new full-screen mode, the compose window expands to fill most of the center of the user’s display, with the outer margins dimming gray for a proper writing session. This can be achieved either temporarily, depending on need, or set as the default way Gmail’s compose box shows up when a new message is started.

The full-screen option can be triggered by clicking the Expand button on the menu bar. To make the expanded view your default option, the More Options menu on the bottom of the box holds the “Default to full-screen” option, which can be toggled on and off as desired. Those who don’t see it yet should be seeing it within the next couple days, since it is happening in waves.

In addition to the full-screen compose window, the formatting toolbar is also now on by default, making it easier to get to the formatting tools that, upon a quick glance, had seemed to disappear when the design change first took place.

2014 Honda Fit Hybrid scores highest MPG among Japanese hybrids

Honda has announced that its 2014 Fit Hybrid has beat out all other hybrid models in Japan with a mileage rating of 36.4 km/L, which works out to about 85MPG in the United States. The small car, among other things, features three driving modes that are automatically engaged depending on the environment in which the car is being driven.

easily referred to as an i-DCD. This is a one-motor system that the auto maker says is best suited for small cars, and works with the EV drive by “disengaging the engine and the motor”. It falls within the company’s Earth Dreams Technology category, which aims at achieving high gas mileage.

Inside, there’s an inline 4-cylinder 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine, as well as the i-DCD’s 7-speed DCT integrated high-output motor. In addition, there’s also an Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) with a lithium-ion battery built into it. Further expanding on the system to achieve a high gas mileage rating is the braking system.

Braking is done via an electric servo brake system, which is said to increase electrical regenerative efficiency. There’s also an all-electric compressor to lessen the load on the engine. All of this, when combined, results in a system that Honda says results in a fuel economy in excess of 35-percent better than the IMA hybrid system that is currently being used.

As mentioned, there are three driving modes, each of which is triggered automatically, comprised of EV Drive Mode (motor-only), the Hybrid Drive Mode (engine and motor driving), and the Engine Drive Mode (engine-only). Sales, said Honda, will start in Japan in September.

Huawei MediaPad 7 Youth tablet revealed with Q3 launch

Huawei has announced a new 7-inch tablet that will be rolling out later this year, the MediaPad 7 Youth. The slate is a modest offering, with Huawei detailing the general specifications around a marketing push that targets the younger generation. There’s no specific launch date for the device yet, with the maker only specifying “Q3 2013.”

The MediaPad 7 Youth, as its name suggests, features a 7-inch display with support for 10-point touch. Unfortunately, Huawei didn’t break out more details about the display, such as what kind of resolution we can expect, nor what kind of panel is used. They do, however, say that it allows for “vivid” 1080p full HD video playback.

Inside, the MediaPad 7 Youth has a 28nm dual-core 1.6GHz processor and a “powerful GPU,” neither of which were detailed further. Connectivity includes HSPA+ 21Mbps and 802.11 wifi. The Li-Polymer battery has a capacity of 4100 mAh that is said to provide a standby time of nearly two weeks. The software is Android 4.1.

As far as the slate itself goes, Huawei says it measures in at 9mm thick, and weighs 350 grams, with a body being constructed of unibody aluminum. The tablet’s price is still unknown, but it’ll be launched in Asia Pacific, Russia, China, Europe, and the Middle East in the next couple months.

Said Huawei’s Vice President of its Home Connected Device Product Line Wang Yinfeng, “The MediaPad 7 Youth is a versatile tablet that provides an unsurpassed experience across hardware and software. Ideal for young people who are always on the move, the MediaPad 7 Youth delivers on Huawei’s promise to make extraordinary technology experiences accessible for all.”
