Sketchy report claims photos show 5.5-inch 'iPhone 6L' display, logic board and 2,915mAh battery

Citing the usual "reliable sources," Taiwanese Apple blog Apple Daily says the images show
three components bound for Apple's rumored 5.5-inch iPhone, which some predict will launch
alongside — or shortly after — a new 4.7-inch version of the smartphone. The publication's
sources refer to the phablet as the "iPhone 6L."

However, even a cursory inspection of the photos reveals two parts, the display and logic
board, are nearly identical to those pictured in previous reports related to the smaller of
Apple's next-gen handsets.

With the display, architectural elements like screw bosses, circuit board anchors and
circuitry are placed in the exact locations as a part revealed last week. In addition, flex
cables are of the same size, located in the same position and feature proportionally sized
connectors as the supposed 4.7-inch variant.

It is highly unlikely that a 4.7-inch iPhone would share the same layout with a sized-up
5.5-inch model, while at the same time sporting different sized connectors.

As for the logic board, this part too lines up perfectly with a component unearthed
yesterday, complete with identical EMI shields, fastener holes and connector design.

The report does, however, contain one never-before-seen part in a 2,915 mAh battery, which
could feasibly be bound for Apple's jumbo-sized handset. Produced by known Apple partner
supplier Huizhou Desay, the battery'a capacity is much larger than the 1,800 mAh unit seen
in a supposed leak associated with the 4.7-inch variant. By comparison, the current iPhone
5s uses a 1,500 mAh battery, while Motorola's 4.7-inch Moto X boasts a 2,200 mAh part.

Although the battery is a possible fit for Apple's 5.5-inch iPhone, not much is known about
the phablet device. Most recently, photos of alleged wake/sleep flex cables and volume
controls hit the Web in July.

Here’s the hands-on BlackBerry Passport video you’ve been clamoring for [Updated]

So how about it, prospective smartphone buyers? Are you still clamoring for the BlackBerry Passport? If so then you’ll definitely want to check out a new video flagged by CrackBerry that was produced by U.K. retailer Carphone Warehouse that gives us a nice little hands-on demonstration of BlackBerry’s upcoming smartphone that will go head-to-head with the iPhone 6 and Galaxy Note 4 this September.

FROM EARLIER: BlackBerry: Consumers are ‘clamoring’ for our new square smartphone.

In the video, Carphone Warehouse shows off some of the Passport’s outside-the-box features such as the new touch-sensitive physical keyboard that essentially doubles as a giant trackball that will let you scroll up and down on pages just by running your fingers over its keys. Carphone Warehouse also praises the Passport’s wide square display, which it points out is terrific for everyone who loves reading and editing spreadsheets on their smartphones. In other words, it looks like the Passport will be a tool, not a toy, that can be used for real work.
The video also shows off the new BlackBerry Assistant feature, which for the first time gives BlackBerry users the same kind of voice-enabled personal assistant that’s long been enjoyed by iPhone fans with Siri and by Android fans with Google Now.

UPDATE: Well, that’s annoying — the video has now been taken private, likely because it showed off key features on a device that hasn’t officially been released yet. If we find another version of the video saved elsewhere, we’ll be sure to post it below.

UPDATE 2: We knew you wouldn’t let us down, Russian YouTube users! Check out a new copy of the video below:

Report: DoT planning to end in-flight calls

Despite all the technology which wants to let you use a cell phone on a plane, the Department of Transportation (DoT) doesn’t seem to be impressed. At a meeting of the International Aviation Club last week, DoT counsel Kathryn Thomson said they’d be taking the next step on what could end up as a formal ban on cell phone usage in-flight, attendees said.

The DoT, for their part, responded to formal requests by saying they’re developing a “notice of proposed rulemaking”. That notice is said to be released in December, and would outline their objection to in-flight call activity. It would then be open to commentary until February, when the DoT would make their final judgement.

It seems the issue is with voice calls, not text or other forms of communication. The FCC recently opened up cell phone usage on flights, leaving the adjudication of that program in the hands of airlines. Those airlines would like the same from the DoT.

The DoT seems to think calls are disruptive, and may feel it falls under their jurisdiction to provide a “safe and adequate” means of transportation for us.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the DoT positioning themselves to ban calls. In December of 2013, Secretary Anthony Foxx said the agency would “begin a process that will look at the possibility of banning these in-flight calls”. that was step one, it seems. Step two is incoming.

There Will Not Be A Live Video Stream For The Amazon Phone Launch

Bad news, nerds. TechCrunch just received word that Amazon will not provide a live video stream of tomorrow’s launch event. Thankfully we’ll have a couple of writers on-hand to live blog the action, but you won’t be able to watch Bezos’ dog-and-pony show until after the event wraps.

Amazon tells us that it will post the event in its entirety on its YouTube channel when it’s over; it will also roll out videos to its media channel. But there will not be a live video stream just like for the Fire TV launch where the retail giant also failed to stream the event.

Amazon’s handling of its phone launch has been haphazard at best, and from a journalist perspective, the whole process was painful. The company just told us the venue of the event yesterday, and that was after a week of not knowing if Amazon was going to select TechCrunch for a press pass (which every outlet had to apply for).

It’s widely expected that Amazon will announce its gimmicky smartphone, which packs head-tracking technology. Most of the news has already been revealed, but a few questions remain. We’ll have plenty of coverage of the event, so tune in tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. PT for all the action.

iPhone 5C demand lower than expected, says Tim Cook

It is rare for Apple, especially its CEO, to admit to some level of error so when it does, everyone is all ears. This has happened yet again as Tim Cook admitted that they might have overestimated the popularity of the iPhone 5C, whose market performance wasn't as they had expected.

To be fair, the brightly colored plastic-backed mid-range iPhone didn't flunk sales. At the end of the quarter, the iPhone 5C sold 51 million units. Unfortunately, Apple expected it to sell for around 55 million. Cook believes that this was because consumers gravitated towards a more interesting, but also more expensive, iPhone 5S.

Cook says that the features on the iPhone 5S, particular the Touch ID, ended up grabbing more attention and thus majority of the sales. The iPhone 5S is also a premium device with high-end hardware. The iPhone 5C, on the other hand, was almost similar to the iPhone 5 and its biggest marketing stunt was the colorful design, yet another Apple first since the company left the colorful iMac era.

This was also the first time that Apple introduced two new iPhone models at the same time, which could have led to a slight confusion among Apple fans. Apple doesn't usually reveal its per-product sales numbers, but it has reduced orders for the mid-range smartphone, prompting many to speculate on the veracity of reports about the iPhone 5C's weak sales.

Now the fate of the iPhone 5C remains unknown. Some think that Apple will soon scrap the device. Apple is also believed to be revising its iPhone strategy and might no longer introduce a plastic, mid-range variant when it unveils its next iPhone generation.

Samsung Galaxy S5 tipped to debut February 23

Following on the heels of yesterday's fingerprint scanner leak, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has found itself in the news again, this time with alleged debut and launch dates. Mobile Review's Eldar Murtazin, who correctly stated when the S4 would arrive, said in a tweet today that Samsung will be showing the smartphone off in Barcelona on February 23 on the cusp of Mobile World Congress.

Following the Galaxy S5's debut in February, Murtazin says the smartphone will then be launched sometime in the end of April, though he didn't peg a specific date for the availability. As far as specifications go, he merely said, "u know them :)", giving a nod towards the numerous sources and rumors that have cropped up about the handset in recent times. Aside from that, he tacked on to the end of the tweet, "new touchwiz ;)".

According to the report that surfaced yesterday, Samsung decided not to go with an iris scanner for the flagship smartphone, the reasons being some issues it would present, such as unlocking the phone in the dark. Instead, the maker is said to be focusing its attention on fingerprint scanning technologies, and that the module for this biometric security could be embedded under the display, allowing for one to unlock the device by touching the screen.

Beyond that, it seems the Galaxy S5 could bring with it a "2K display" in the 5-inch range, which could bring with it 560 or more pixels per inch. Also tipped in recent times is the use of ISOCELL camera technology, which would bring a high-quality camera along with the new smartphone. Other rumors include a focus on eye-tracking capabilities, which would serve to bolster facial recognition and similar technologies.

Galaxy Note 3 KitKat rollout starts, Poland gets it first

If you are the owner of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet, a new update is beginning to roll out for the Android operating system. The update brings the Note 3 to Android KitKat. The rollout is not happening everywhere at once though.

The first country to get the Android KitKat update for the Galaxy Note 3 is Poland. The update is available for the Polish owners via the Samsung Kies update software. The KitKat update also has another caveat in Poland, it’s only for the Snapdragon 800 powered version.

Other than the US and apparently Poland, the international version of the phone uses Samsung's Exynos processor. Since the Polish version of the Note 3 is virtually identical to the one here in the US, perhaps the US will be the next location to get the update.

If you are unfamiliar with the Galaxy Note 3, you can check out our review of the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone for all the details. The smartphone has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 and 386 ppi. The Note 3 also features the S Pen for writing on the screen.

HP to launch Android phone in near future, says source

On Christmas Eve, word surfaced of plans by HP to launch two smartphones by the year's end, something that didn't pan out but could add substance to the newest rumor that has cropped up. According to a source that spoke to the folks over at 9to5Google, HP plans to launch an inexpensive Android smartphone as early as next week, though a more narrowed-down launch date hasn't been specified.

According to the source, who is said to be someone from inside HP, the smartphone will be an inexpensive Android offering priced somewhere around $200 USD and slated for release in multiple markets, the exact number of which wasn't specified. HP hasn't said anything in a public fashion, but the source says the launch could end up being as soon as next week barring any unexpected delays.

The source says the project has been a year and a half in the making, and is being run by HP's senior vice president of mobility Alberto Torres. As far as the phone itself goes, the device is said to have "obvious cost cutting measures" in order to achieve its low price point, and to resemble in nature Samsung's Galaxy Note. The price falls in line with the details that surfaced last year, despite no phone being launched near the year's end.

According to that information, which had surfaced by way of The Information, the smartphone would be a 6-inch offering priced at $200 USD without contract. That same report also stated there was a second one in the making, and that it would be larger at a massive 7-inches with a price tag of $250 USD sans contract.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact hands-on

In the announcement of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, the company made a rather pointed suggestion - our best doesn't have to be our biggest. Working specifications that closely match those of the Sony Xperia Z1, this miniature device works with high-end processing power and a 20+ megapixel camera. Right next to the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z1 Compact also looks like it's working with a display that's just as brilliant - as you'll see below.

This device has impressed us in a way that's not only based in the device itself, but in the idea that it'll open up a new trend for smaller smartphones through 2014. While users have been asking for smaller devices - like the Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini - to work with top-level power for some time, Sony delivers. They deliver in a variety of colors to boot!

This machine works with the ability to pair with the Sony Smartwatch 2, it's got a matching set of peripherals if you wish, and it's made with metal and glass. While we're still not too impressed with the fingerprint-magnet this device appears as right out of the box, we still come away impressed with the overall feel of the machine.

Below you'll find a number of example shots from this smartphone's back-facing camera. While you could keep in mind that we might not be working with final software here if you want, the photos already look pretty superior here before release.

When you've got glass and metal making up the vast majority of the build of a smartphone, the smartphone feels expensive. Better than expensive, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact feels like the company that made it took the time to perfect it, sculpting it to their own best-possible look and feel for release later this year. We'll be waiting to trade in our Z and Z1 right out the gate - not because they aren't awesome, but because this size is just about as ideal for our palm as it gets.

HTC Q413 brings Beats-based gain, smaller operating loss

This week we're having a peek at a bit of mixed news from HTC, with their final quarter of 2013 being wrapped up with both a gain and a loss. Speaking from an operating loss perspective, the group lost NT$1.56 billion - that's $52 million in USD. This is a relatively healthy cutback, so to speak, from the operating loss in Q3 2013 when HTC spoke up about a drop of NT$2.97 billion - that's $101 million USD.

On a more positive note, HTC reported that the selling of their remaining shares of Beats this season allowed them a cool net profit of NT$310 million - aka $10.3 million USD gained this quarter. The company also saw a quarter in which they've released the HTC One Max, the significantly larger relative of their hero phone for the year, the original HTC One.

This marks the end of a rather exciting year for the company after they'd moved in a rather pointed way toward a real hero smartphone strategy. Calling the device "One", to be extra clear about it, HTC made it clear that they were going to put the most massive bit of their efforts into a single handset that'd aim to rule them all. Given social networking feedback in customer satisfaction and the ample amount of positive reviews the handset received, they'd done all but make sales of the device.

While this quarter's reported earnings certainly aren't the major turnaround the company was hoping for, things do appear to be looking up for the company. If this trend continues, HTC will be shooting for a positive set of wins through 2014 with the release of their next wave of handsets. Have a peek at the latest rumor mill gush on this code-named "HTC One 2" right this minute!

Lenovo Vibe Z is company’s first LTE smartphone

Lenovo, quite the busy bee for CES 2014, has introduced its first-ever smartphone with LTE support, the Vibe Z. With this super thin handset comes a variety of features, including gesture control and rapid speeds. Coming alongside this flagship offering are a few other models, namely the 6-inch S930 phablet, the so-called "tweener" S650 mid-range handset, and the 5-inch A859.

Lenovo has been making a diligent effort in the smartphone market, and with that comes a milestone of sorts for the company: the Vibe Z, a thin and fast handset loaded with custom software in addition to Android 4.3. With the Vibe Z comes a 5.5-inch IPS Full HD display with 20/20 Vision technology and 400 pixels-per-inch. There's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz processor alongside 2GB of RAM and up to 16GB of internal storage space. Unfortunately, there's no microSD expansion slot, so you'll have to make do with what is available, or cloud storage beyond that.

Around back the Vibe Z features a 13-megapixel camera with a 5-megapixel offering on the front of the device, as well Lenovo's Super Camera and Super Gallery apps. As far as the LTE connectivity goes, which is the Vibe Z's biggest bragging point, download speeds up to 150Mbit/s and upload speeds up to 50Mbit/s are offered. There's a micro-SIM card, as well as support for GSM/UMTS networks up to 2100. Other connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
Beyond the Vibe Z, Lenovo has also shown off the S650, S930, and the A859. The latter among these stands out on its own, with Lenovo calling it an "all-around performance model". With this comes a 5-inch 720p IPS display and Android 4.2. The S650 is a mid-range offering with a 4.7-inch qHD IPS display, and the S930 is a higher-end phablet with a 6-inch 720p display. Both S-series and the Vibe Z have a rear cover that feels like fabric, as well as a silver body.

The Vibe Z will be available staring in February at $549+ USD, while the S-series handsets are available now at $229 USD and $319 USD, respectively. The S859 is available now starting at $219 USD.

Moto X scores perma-price cut with the dawn of 2014

As everyone awakens bleary-eyed from a celebratory night of ushering in the new year, Motorola has announced a permanent price cut for its no-contract Moto X flagship handset. Whilst a bit too late for those of you who grabbed one of these customizable phones for the holidays, the holdouts among us who have been waiting for a price drop can get the device for $399 USD off contract.

Motorola is inviting all to "ring in the new year" with a sans-contract Moto X, the price of which is now $399, with the handset maker promising it applies to any color combination. This under cuts some of Motorola's competitors' handsets, with the company taking a direct jab at the iPhone 5s and GALAXY S 4 pricing -- both are higher than the new Moto X pricing.

This contrasts with yester-year's $499 pricing, and brings it closer to the Nexus 5, financially speaking. You'll still need to drop another $100 if you want to get the fancy wood backing, and this price drop applies to the 16GB model. If you want to get the no-contract 32GB model, you're going to be shelling out $449.99 instead.

At the end of the day, the price drop gives consumers another solid handset option -- off contract -- that doesn't break the bank. Whether buyers will be jumping aboard the Moto X ship this new year or going with the slightly-less-expensive Nexus 5 is yet to be seen, but for those dreaming of a special color scheme or some polished bamboo goodness, Motorola has used the dawning of the new year to make its wares a bit more attractive.

Sony VAIO Windows Phone tipped for mid-2014

Sony is considering launching at least one Windows Phone handset in 2014, sources claim, as Microsoft courts potential partners to bolster support for its "third platform" OS. Sony, which has been building exclusively Android-powered smartphones for several years, is in the midst of negotiations with Microsoft about adding a second ecosystem to its range, insiders tell The Information, which could potentially launch with VAIO branding rather than the Xperia brand its existing phones carry.

That would presumably be intended to define Sony Windows Phones as an extension of the company's PC business, rather than the more consumer-centric focus Android is generally associated with. The handset could potentially launch as soon as midway through next year, assuming the deal actually goes through.

That's nowhere near certain today, however, with Microsoft and Sony still discussing things like what apps could be preloaded onto the smartphone, what licensing demands Microsoft might have, and other concerns. Microsoft is said to be potentially willing to reduce or even waive its license fees.

Sony isn't the only target for Microsoft's expansion plans. The company is supposedly also discussing partnership potential with ZTE, known for its more affordable Android devices, on a deal which could possibly see ZTE-branded low-cost Windows Phones for the US, Europe, and Chinese markets, among others.

Recent best-selling sales of the Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 521 might suggest that's a good strategy, too. The budget Windows Phone has comfortably outsold other handsets running the same OS, with Nokia crediting the parity of the same software experience as its more expensive handsets as a key motivator for that buying decision.

Whether that will be enough to strengthen Microsoft's position in mobile and potentially narrow the gap between Windows Phone and the two dominant OSes, Android and iOS, remains to be seen. The software company is said to be considering more unusual possibilities to tackle that, too, including dual-booting phones from Samsung and Huawei that could load into both Windows Phone and Android at the user's request.

No deal has been finalized, and neither Sony nor Microsoft will confirm that negotiations are underway.

Apple vs Samsung patent talks to resume

Amid years of court battles, the likes of which have been public in a big way, Apple and Samsung have apparently agreed to begin talks of patent agreements. This chat would be a continuation of agreements made on patents on both sides of the rail, suggesting both companies would like to settle their massive sets of matters out of court. This could be the end of the epic years-long battle between the companies on mobile matters worldwide.

Speaking with the Korea Times, an “official at the FTC” has let it be known that Apple and Samsung have begun “working-level discussions” aimed at signing “a potential deal”. At the moment, he or she suggested, “they are in the process of narrowing differences over royalty payments.”

A Samsung source has gone so far as to suggest that the respective CEOs of both companies could meat to hash out matters quickly. This would be a one-on-one meeting between Shin Jong-kyun, CEO of Samsung, and Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. At the moment the companies are at a point where they’ve made an agreement with U.S. federal judge Lucy H. Koh to come to a settlement as of January 8th. So they’ve got precious time between here and then, needless to say.

The Korea Times says that the situation between the two has been described as “not desperate”, while they say that this same Samsung source says Apple is still asking “too much” when they’ve asked for $30 per device for the company’s patent violations.

The FTC official speaking this week pushed the idea that “this is all about money and pride.” He went on to say that “this is not a political issue,” continuing:

”That’s why U.S. President Barack Obama vetoed a ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission that had decided to place a complete ban on certain Apple products in the U.S. If Obama lets the USITC’s decision take effect, then concerns will be raised that the U.S. government cares too much about Samsung-owned patents” - FTC representative

This legal battle has been going on in many forms since all the way back in 2011. Judge Lucy Koh has been presiding over one case in the USA for this whole time, while a variety of cases have gone down around the world.

BlackBerry CEO accuses rivals of FUD-spreading

New BlackBerry CEO John Chen has promised a new age of transparence as he tries to turn the ailing Canadian company around, blaming rival phone manufacturers for trying to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt around how it is holding up. "Don't be fooled by the competition's rhetoric" Chen wrote in a piece for CNBC, echoing parts of the company's manifesto as set out in its recent dire financial results, when it announced it would be pushing over some of the responsibility for handset design to Foxconn.

That deal, Chen insists, is about keeping BlackBerry more responsive to market demands. The result will be faster product cycles, he suggests, leaving BlackBerry itself to focus on software, its place in the enterprise, and BBM.

According to sources speaking to BGR, meanwhile, the first Foxconn-designed BlackBerry will lack a physical keyboard - perhaps a surprise to its core audience of messaging fans - though it is believed to run BlackBerry 10. That's presumably in an attempt to push the OS into the low-end market, something the company has struggled to do.

In fact, handset sales most recently have overwhelmingly skewed toward devices running the older BlackBerry 7, rather than the newer platform the company has set its future on.

"I believe BlackBerry has a clear lane ahead of us to create new trails as a nimbler, more agile competitor" John Chen, CEO, BlackBerry

As for what BlackBerry itself will be concentrating on, Chen says that despite the company's competition suggesting that it is losing its place in the enterprise, that's not in fact the case. "We're still the leader" the new chief exec argues, pointing out that the global enterprise customer base totals more than 80,000 while all seven of the G7 governments are BlackBerry users.

The US Department of Defense, he highlights, has only granted "Authority to Operate" to the BlackBerry platform. However, both Samsung and Apple are chasing that level of approval.

Unfortunately, some of the current successes in BlackBerry's story aren't actually making them any money, at least directly. BBM, the now cross-platform messaging service, is flourishing, Chen says, though concedes that it won't be a source of revenue for a few years.

Whether Chen's enthusiasm will be matched by the market remains to be seen. BlackBerry confirmed earlier this month that it would be canceling some of its more affordable device plans as it tries to trim its outgoings.

BungBungame “Project S” smartphone is glass-and-aluminum powerhouse

The Taiwan-based company BungBungame has developed a prototype high-end Android smartphone with a target price point of $299, a low price for the specs. The phone is called "Project S" for now. Johannes Knapp of NewGadgets.de tipped us to a hands-on he recorded recently when he visited the company's headquarters.

The prototype you're seeing here has a true octa-core CPU with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It sports a 2560 x 1440 WQHD display -- a standard usually used in larger screens like laptops and monitors. The 5.8-inch screen splits the difference between, say, an iPhone 5 and an Asus Fonepad Note 6. That comparison is shown below.

The body of the device is intentionally as clean as possible. It's an aluminum-and-glass phone with hidden stereo speakers, earpiece, and microphone. Even the BungBungame logo will be removed for the final product, letting the distinctive form speak for itself.

Project S has ports for micro USB, triple-microphone recording, 3.5mm stereo audio jack, micro SD slot expandable to 64GB, and a micro SIM slot. A full range of on-board sensors are integrated. Charging can be done wirelessly or via USB. The performance of the 3,000 mAh lithium-ion battery hasn't been finalized as yet.

Have a look at Knapp's hands-on and an image gallery below.

US mobile internet users gobbled about 1.2GB monthly in 2013

2013 has seen a massive uptick in the amount of data that mobile internet users in the US consume each month. A recently published report shows that the amount of data consumers by the average person in the US via mobile connections has almost doubled in 2013. Last year the average US web user used up 690 MB per month.

This year the average mobile web user in the US consumed about 1.2GB of mobile data each month. The numbers come from industry analyst Chetan Sharma, a consultant for wireless carriers. The amount of mobile data consumed on average globally is much smaller at 240MB per month. That is an increase from the 140MB per month the world averaged last year.

Some of the massive growth in mobile data consumption in the US is attributed to two factors. Those two factors include significantly faster mobile networks in many parts of the country and smartphones with larger screens.

ABI Research predicts that by the end of 2013, there will be about 1.4 billion smartphones in use around the world. Cisco predicts that by 2016 internet traffic form mobile devices will exceed traffic generated by wired devices like desktop computers. That would make sense considering that many consumers are replacing computers with smartphones and tablets.

HTC One Max goes gold: 'Amber Gold'

Welcome to the next black-bordered HTC One and HTC One Max, working with what HTC describes as the “Amber Gold” edition of the devices. Here we’ve got a general color-change along the same lines as the last several done over the year, released in a limited edition in the East. These devices seem, for now, to be coming with the same innards as their originals as well.

The HTC One Amber Gold edition and the HTC One Max Amber Gold Edition will not likely be appearing in the United States. In fact it’s more likely that we’d see the HTC One 2, or whatever HTC plans on calling the next generation, before we see gold.

The interesting bit in this color scheme is the fact that it’s got a black border. While the original HTC One, Max, and Mini worked with white borders, each new edition of the machines has worked with black. This includes the black front/back, blue (both Vivid Blue and Electric Blue), and Glamour Red.

There’s also a David Koma special edition unit out there with a couple of odd black-on-silver pushes you can see here. This version works with the white plastic border once again.

A couple of new golds join this bit, one of them being delivered in the “Gold HTC One x MOBO” edition earlier this year. This piece of equipment worked with the 18th anniversary of the MOBO awards and made with 18-carat gold. These machines were given to winders of the “Best Newcomer Award” for the MOBO Awards and were given away as such.

Finally there’s the HTC One Brilliant Gold unit - that’s the one you’re seeing at the head of this article as well. This gold isn’t 18-carat, but it’s certainly gold over the original silver.

If you had the opportunity to get one of these colors in the carrier of your choice, which one would you roll with?

Samsung KNOX flaw leaves Galaxy S 4 compromised say researchers

Samsung's KNOX security system on the Galaxy S 4 has a significant security hole that could allow data believed secure to be intercepted, including messages, browser use, and files transferred, researchers claim, though the South Korean company denies the seriousness of the supposed flaw. KNOX, which Samsung launched at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, is the company's attempt to take on BlackBerry in the enterprise, creating secure partitions on the phone for business and personal use. However, researchers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev claim to have discovered a flaw in KNOX that allows data to be easily intercepted, despite supposedly being protected by the system.

According to the university, the issue was inadvertently spotted by Ph.D. student Mordechai Guri while doing other testing on the Galaxy S 4. He found that by loading a special, compromised app on the non-secure, "personal" part of the Android smartphone, all of the data transferred by the handset - including what was used by the "secure" part - could be monitored.

Alternatively, the app - which could be disguised as a game or other simple application - could even surreptitiously inject its own code into the secure data transfer, the researchers say.

According to Guri, the fault has been replicated on several Galaxy S 4 handsets purchased through retail stores. KNOX can be downloaded to the phone, having been released earlier this year; the system is preloaded on the Galaxy Note 3. Although it carries no cost for users to download, corporations must pay a licensing fee for the various server-side components to the system.

Meanwhile, Samsung maintains that its preliminary inquiries suggest the issue is not as serious as the university researchers claim. Although conceding that a loophole exists, in a comment to the WSJ, a Samsung spokesperson argued that the original testing looked to have been done on a device not equipped with the typical security measures.

A typical enterprise user would have other software on the Galaxy S 4 which the lab team did not load, Samsung claimed, and with that in place "the core Knox architecture cannot be compromised or infiltrated by such malware" the spokesperson concluded.

Around 500 Galaxy S 4 handsets have been bought by the Defense Information Systems Agency and are undergoing testing, in collaboration with the NSA, to ascertain their potential safety for use on Pentagon systems. However, a US Department of Defense spokesperson said in response to the reported flaw, none of the handsets had been deployed, and the phone was still not approved for Pentagon use.

Samsung has already patched some holes in the KNOX system, releasing security updates as it identifies issues. The company is continuing to look into the claims made by the Israeli university.

HP rumored to launch two Android phablets by year’s end

Hewlett-Packard may or may not release two brand new smartphones by the end of 2013, reported The Information today by way of The Verge. That gives the computing company eight days to make rumors come true. The phones -- for which no leaked or officially sanctioned images exist to our knowledge -- are expected to be a 6-inch "phablet" and a 7-inch phablet.

By "phablet" we mean either a huge phone or a small tablet. The origin for today's rumor is -- surprise, surprise -- "sources". Both products are expected to run Android, not HP's webOS.

Previously, HP launched and soon thereafter shuttered its webOS smartphone ambitions with the Pre3 (see hero image above) and the itty-bitty Veer (see below). The phones couldn't compete against the Apple-Samsung near-duopoly in the global smartphone marketplace, let alone claw past the likes of HTC, Sony and LG.

An image and benchmarks for a possible HP Android smartphone surfaced in July 2013, only to be briskly denied by an HP representative as false. "Someone is making stuff up," the representative said in a tiny statement.

The two rumored phones now under discussion will be released in emerging markets first, specifically India, China and the Philippines. The prices are pegged in the range of $200-250 USD off-contract.

Eight days. Clock's ticking. We'll see if The Information's sources pan out and let you know if anything emerges.
